Partners
The Department of Optics does not work alone. Behind every research direction there are partners – Ukrainian institutes, enterprises and universities abroad. Below are those with whom we have joint papers, joint projects or signed agreements, not just good relations.
7Ukrainian partners – NAS institutes, enterprises, university units
9International – universities, research centres and international societies
6Countries: USA, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, Poland
European XFEL, GermanyThe European X-ray free-electron laser near Hamburg. A place of internships; department graduate Mykola Biednov works there as Instrument Scientist at the FXE instrument.Internships
DESY, GermanyThe German synchrotron centre in Hamburg. Department graduates intern and work here – including Kateryna Zelenska (DESY fellow) and Daryna Storozhuk.Internships
Chemnitz University of Technology, GermanySpectroscopy of semiconductor structures. DAAD scholarships, two-month internships and two certificate programmes in English.Joint researchInternships
Shizuoka University, JapanLaser-induced thermal emission of carbon materials. The partner on the Japanese side is Professor Toru Aoki. Also a double-degree programme.Double degreeJoint research
Le Mans University, FranceA double-degree programme for master’s students ran in 2016–2018; now – internship opportunities.Internships
University of Arkansas, USAInstitute for Nanoscience and Engineering. GeSn structures are grown there by molecular beam epitaxy and measured here. The department’s most active international line.Joint research
V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor PhysicsNAS of Ukraine, Kyiv. Probe microscopy and structural diagnostics of samples. Joint papers in Nanoscale and Physical Review Materials.Joint research
Institute of Physics of the NAS of UkraineThe department’s academic partner: graduates of the department have worked and defended their theses at the Institute of Physics of the NAS of Ukraine – from cholesteric liquid-crystal lasers to doctoral programmes.
Arsenal Special Device Production State EnterpriseKyiv. The department’s branch has operated here since 1984; students do their placements here. Optoelectronic instruments.Internships
UKRMETRTESTSTANDARTA placement base: bachelor’s theses of the department’s students were carried out on UKRMETRTESTSTANDART equipment, and lecturers did internships here.
MelexisA placement base for students.Internships
SPIEThe International Society for Optics and Photonics. Education grants to the department, a student chapter, at least seventeen scholars since 2008.Professional society
OpticaThe international optical society. Co-organiser of SPO; a student chapter operates at the department.Professional society
DAADThe German Academic Exchange Service. Funds a semester of study or an internship in Germany – the department’s students go through the Chemnitz partnership; scholarships for students and doctoral students.Internships
What we work on together
GeSn – the University of Arkansas and the Lashkaryov Institute
The department’s most active international line. The structures are grown by molecular beam epitaxy at the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering of the University of Arkansas, structural diagnostics and probe microscopy are done at the V.E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics, and the electrical and photoelectric measurements – at the Department of Optics.
In recent years this collaboration has produced papers in Physical Review Materials, Nanoscale, the Journal of Applied Physics, Semiconductor Science and Technology and Crystal Growth & Design. The list is on the Publications.
Thermal emission of carbon materials – Shizuoka University
Joint research on the laser-induced thermal emission of carbon micro- and nanoparticles. The partner on the Japanese side is Professor Toru Aoki, Shizuoka University.
Synchrotron research
The department is part of the Ukrainian synchrotron community USynC – its workshop is held within the SPO symposium. This is access to large facilities: European XFEL in Germany, the SOLARIS synchrotron in Poland, the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.
For a student this is a rare opportunity: getting onto the beam of a large facility is usually only possible through a research group that already has beamtime there.
Spectroscopy of semiconductor structures – Chemnitz
Chemnitz University of Technology. The same channel through which the DAAD scholarships and the Advanced Microscopy Techniques and Advanced Functional Materials certificate programmes run. How a student can get there →
What a student gets out of it
A partnership is not a line in a report. Through these links a student gets an internship, a master’s thesis topic, access to equipment not available in Ukraine, and co-authorship of an international paper. How to use it →
Want to cooperate
The department is open to joint projects with research institutions and enterprises. Write to optics.phys@knu.ua or call +38 067 451 39 02.
If it is about access to equipment, this goes rather through the Centre for Collective Use of Equipment: external organisations work with it on a contractual basis.
