International

The department has four standing partners abroad and access to three large-scale facilities in Europe. Its students hold scholarships of international optical societies. Enquiries about cooperation are welcome.

Partner universities

• University of Arkansas, United States — growth of GeSn and GeSiSn structures, which are then characterised in Kyiv. The partnership underlies the department’s largest research direction.
• Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany — exchange in two formats together with certificate programmes, supported by DAAD scholarships; joint work on semiconductor structures.
• Shizuoka University, Japan — student exchange and a double-degree track at master’s level; joint work on laser-induced thermal emission.
• Le Mans Université, France — double-degree track at master’s level.

Large-scale facilities

Through the Ukrainian synchrotron community the department has access to European XFEL in Germany, the SOLARIS synchrotron in Poland and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. The Paul Scherrer Institute is also a partner of the SPO symposium. Two graduates of the department are permanent beamline scientists at European XFEL.

Funding for students

• SPIE education grants — USD 3,000–11,000, used for equipment for the practical courses and for student projects. Seventeen of our students have held SPIE scholarships since 2008.
• DAAD — German Academic Exchange Service scholarships for a semester or a research stay in Germany, most often through the Chemnitz partnership.
• Hrytseniuk and Melenevskyi Foundation — a named scholarship for students of the department, awarded annually by competition.
• Micro-credential programmes — certificate programmes at European universities, taken without leaving Ukraine.

Research grants

NATO SPS project G5853, Innovative Solar Cells, and CRDF Global project FSA3-20-66707-0 — both led by Serhii Kondratenko — together with projects of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science.

For visiting students and researchers

Teaching at both degree levels is conducted in Ukrainian, with a number of master’s courses in English, so a full degree taken in English is not currently available. Research stays, joint measurements and co-supervised theses are arranged individually; the point of contact is the department office: optics.phys@knu.ua.
